Security Issues

When security is a prime concern, just any office furniture won't do. Ensuring files and valuables are safe from prying eyes and thieves is just smart business practice in addition to being the law in some cases.

For those who have documents, files and valuables in their offices that need to be kept under lock and key, there are a number of options in office furniture that might fit the bill.

Personnel directors will likely require secured filing cabinets. For confidential files such as medical records and the like, regular locking cabinets might not be enough. But these documents, sensitive in nature and protected by federal law, might in fact require a more secure locking system than a cheap lock from a dime store. Look into heavy-duty cabinets with specialized locks that cannot have their keys duplicated.

For regular files or small quantities of documents, a simple desk lock that's a bit above average might do the trick. There are a variety of desks on the market - either stock or custom made - that provide decent locking mechanisms.

Valuables, money and other items that you simply don't want to risk losing or having stolen can go into office size vaults. Many furniture manufacturers sell these as part of their standard fare.

Professionals that will require secured filing systems include those who handle medical records, lawyers, doctors or anyone that comes in contact with personnel files with sensitive information. Keeping files of this nature secured and off-limits to those who don't have a bona fide reason to peruse them is not only common courtesy, in some cases it's the law.

For those who handle valuables or money, drawers with locking mechanisms and/or safes are just plain smart. Would you, for example, trust an engagement ring to a jeweler who didn't lock it up in a safe at night during a repair job? Probably not!

While you cannot protect against every eventuality, it is a good idea to take reasonable measures to protect employee, client or patient confidentiality and/or valuables. Smart purchases in office furniture can go a long way toward making sure you've done your part to keep things safe.
